Nasser Al Khelaifi is a Qatari Businessman and the president of the Professional Football club, Paris Saint-Germain(PSG). Nasser has recently added living legend Lionel Messi to his football club and he hopes that PSG will make history with the help of Messi. Nasser’s current net worth is estimated to be around $8 billion. 

Early life

Nasser was born in Doha, Qatar, on the 12th of November, 1973. There’s not much information about his early life and education. However, his father was a pearl fisherman. 

He joined Qatar University and earned a graduate degree in Economics. Later, he went to the University of Piraeus and received a postgraduate degree. 

Earlier, Nasser was a tennis professional and was considered the second most successful member of the tennis competition team, the Qatar Davis Cup team. He has appeared on two main tours while playing on the Association of Tennis Professionals(ATP). He lost the match in the first round. 

The first time he lost to former French Open Champion, Thomas Muster in St. Polten in 1996, and secondly, he lost in Doha in 2001. Later in 2002, he reached the career-high singles ranking of 995. As a tennis player, he has won the GCC Team Tournament. After an unsatisfactory career in Tennis, he chose to become the president of the Qatar Tennis Federation in November 2008. 

Net worth and career

In 2011, Nasser was elected as the Vice-president of the Asian Tennis Federation. In June 2011, he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Qatar Sports Investments(QSI). In June 2011, the investment company acquired the football club, PSG. After this acquisition, he was serving as the chairman of the board, and CEO of the football club. He was appointed as the new president of PSG on October 7, 2011. 

Meanwhile, he presented his 5-year plan to make PSG the top football club in France and abroad. He brought the former Brazilian footballer Leonardo to the club. The football club reportedly failed to show an impressive performance during 2011-12 in the UEFA Europa League and they were eliminated soon. 

In 2012-13, PSG bounced back with improved strategy and plans, and consequently, they won the Ligue 1 title. Meanwhile, they also made it to the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League. PSG scored 89 points and finished at the top of Ligue 1 in the 2013-14 season. They also reached the quarter-finals again where they were defeated by Chelsea. 

Nasser designed some brilliant plans in 2012, and according to the plan, QSI acquired the Paris Handball Club. This club later merged with the PSG sports franchise to become much wider and more competitive. In 2012, PSG Handball won the LNH Division 1, and since then it has won 5 times. The football club reached the EHF Champions League by the year 2016-17. 

As mentioned above, Nasser has welcomed Lionel Messi to his football club. Messi has reportedly signed a 2-year contract deal with PSG. On August 10, 2021, he reached Paris via private jet and signed the contract. Nasser gave a positive gesture to Messi upon joining his team. He remarked, “I am delighted that Messi has chosen to join PSG and we are proud to welcome him to Paris with his family”. 

Personal life

Nasser Al Khelaifi is a married man. Although, he has always kept his personal life private. As per information, he has four kids, and his family lives in Qatar. 

Nasser has been into legal trouble many times. He was accused of being involved in bribery during the 2017 and 2019 Doha nominations which were happening for the World Championships in Athletics. Nevertheless, the bribery charge was dropped by Swiss Prosecutors in Feb 2020. 

In addition to this, he was accused of aggravated criminal mismanagement and acquired by the courts in October 2020. The charge was made by the Swiss Federal Court on 14 September 2020, related to a meeting that took place at the French headquarters of beIN. At this meeting, he pleaded to buy a 5 million euros worth villa in Sardinia in exchange to grant the screening rights to beIN Media for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.

Furthermore, Al-Khelaifi is one of the most powerful men in French Football out of 30 men listed by the French daily sports newspaper, L’Equipe in 2016. Likewise, France Football mentioned him as the most influential personality in football in March 2020.
